European Parliament Declares Climate Emergency

Planet B

In advance of this week’s UN COP25 Climate Change Conference, the European Parliament has approved a resolution declaring a global climate and environmental emergency.

Specifically, the European Parliament wants the EU to commit to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest. To this end, the Parliament urges the European Commission to ensure that all proposals are aligned with a 1.5 °C target. Furthermore, the members of the European Parliament call on the EU to cut emissions by 55% by 2030 to become climate-neutral by 2050. This target should be included in the European Green Deal.

The resolution states that all countries should reduce emissions from shipping and aviation and that EU countries should at least double their contributions to the international Green Climate Fund. In addition, the members of the European Parliament urge all EU countries to eliminate all direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies by 2020.
