On 16 January, Anja Karliczek, German Federal Minister of Education and Research, inaugurated the Science Year 2020, which will focus on the bioeconomy. The aim of the dedicated Science Year is to raise public awareness for the importance of a bio-based economy.

“Bioeconomy is key to sustainable living and a viable economy,” said Karliczek. “However, thus far, only few are familiar with the topic.” With various activities throughout the year, the ministry wants to stress the potential of research on bioeconomy, in particular in relation to facing the challenges of climate change. Another aim is to highlight products made from renewable resources.
