The Phenobot is a fully automated system for the assessment of leaf surface structures. It consists of a conveyor belt, a motorized rotary plate and an xyz positioner for the camera sensors. The design is LemnaTec-compatible, but will also work as a stand-alone version. The camera system is mounted on a pan-tilt joint and uses a time-of-flight camera to position a high resolution RGB camera for optimum trichome recognition. For this, a 3D-image of the plant is created first. Then, a representative area on a leaf is selected automatically according to the user’s specifications. An integrated software combines realtime imaging and camera control. Image analysis is done by an integrated pattern recognition software. The system is still under development and will be optimized for tobacco, barley and Arabidopsis. The Phenobot is being developed in a cooperation with the IFF Magdeburg.
